DeKALB, Ill. - Lisa Maier (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) scored in the 51st minute to lift Northern Illinois to a 1-0 regulation victory over Southeast Missouri Friday afternoon at the Soccer/Track and Field Complex. The win moves the Huskies to 4-0-3, equaling the best start in school history (2004) and extends their unbeaten streak to a school-record 13 matches.
After a scoreless first half that NIU led statistically, Maier notched her first goal of the season off a steal inside the box at 51:21.
Lindsey Curnock (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) preserved the victory with a brilliant save inside the game's final five minutes. The junior made five saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season and the 21st of her career.
"It is a great feeling to get the win, especially being back at home," said head coach Carrie Barker. "We have been improving each match and our girls definitely deserved the win today. Our team started strong, stayed disciplined throughout the match and we made adjustments throughout. We fought hard and it was great to get the reward."
NIU outshot SEMO 13-8, including an 8-3 first half margin. The Huskies held a 6-5 edge in shots of goal.
The victory was the seventh consecutive home win for the Huskies in what was the first meeting between the two schools.
NU plays its final non-conference game of the season Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Neb. against the Creighton Bluejays. The Huskies open MAC play next weekend with home matches against Bowling Green and defending MAC Tournament champion Toledo.
