OMAHA, Neb. - Northern Illinois' school-record 14-match unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 loss at Creighton. The Huskies are now 4-1-3 on the season, equaling the school's best eight-game start, after absorbing their first defeat since Oct. 14, 2007 at Miami.
The host Bluejays raced out to a 3-0 first half lead with all three markers coming from Marcy Gans, who set a Morrison Stadium record and became the first player to have a hat trick against NIU since 2002. After her first goal came at 11:38 on a cross in front of the net, Gans scored on a free kick at 16:55 and then struck again at 19:18 off a corner kick.
Trailing 3-0, Jestina Orlando (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South/North Dakota State) put the Huskies on the scoreboard with a goal at 36:53 off a pass from Micaela Damas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North). NIU continued to threaten offensively but could not draw closer on Creighton (7-3-0).
"We got off to a slow start and made some mistakes early," said head coach Carrie Barker. "I thought we played very well in the second half and ended up outshooting them for the game. We need to learn to put together an entire game to win."
NIU outshot Creighton 11-7 in the second half and 17-15 for the game. Jenna Clausen (Racine, Wisc./Horlick) led all players with six shots in the match.
The Huskies return home and open conference play next weekend, hosting Bowling Green Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and defending MAC Tournament Champion Toledo Sunday at 1 p.m.
