BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Two goals from Karen Enockson (St. Charles, Ill./East) and a goal from Erin Fahey (New Lenox, Ill./Lincolnd-Way Central) midway through the second half lifted Northern Illinois to a 3-2 victory over Bowling Green in the MAC opener for both teams. The Huskies improved to 4-2-2, 1-0-0 while BGSU fell to 3-5-1, 0-1-0.
The win marked a series of firsts for NIU: its first road win of 2007, first MAC opening game victory since 2004, and its first win against Bowling Green since 2002
Enockson notched her first goal of the game early at 1:19 on a score that was assisted by Jestina Orlando (Park Ridge, Ill./North Dakota State). The Falcons tied the game at one at 33:17 on a Huskie miscue that resulted in a goal credited to Stacy Lucas.
At 53:50 Enockson tallied her second marker, and third of the season, to make it 2-1 on an assist from Thea Johnson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). The Huskies added another score at 71:02 when Fahey recorded an unassisted goal to make it 3-1.
BGSU scored a late goal at 84:40 to provide the final 3-2 margin.
"Our girls did a great job today and I am very proud of the entire effort we put forth," said associate head coach Paul Jobson. "It was just a matter of time until we got goals and today we created a lot of chances. We played a great game today and it was a very physical game contest. Getting a road win in the MAC is huge. Now we have to refocus on a good Toledo team Sunday."
Audrey Holmer (Elmhurst, Ill./York) made three saves and recorded her second victory of the year while playing all 90 minutes in net for the Huskies.
NIU plays at Toledo Sunday in a noon CT rematch of last season's MAC Championship match.
