DeKALB, Ill. - Toledo claimed a 1-0 decision over Northern Illinois in a physical contest Sunday afternoon at the Huskie Soccer/Track Complex. The loss dropped the Huskies to 5-2-3, 1-1-0 on the season and ended a nine-match home unbeaten streak that dated back to Oct. 5, 2007.
The Rockets (6-3-0, 1-1-0) scored the game's lone game in the 41st minute when Rachel White found the back off the net off a cross inside the box from Nora Jereb. Goalkeeper Vicki Traven totaled five saves to preserve the victory.
NIU outshot Toledo 12-11, but the Rockets held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Becca Ford (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) led the Huskies with five shots, followed by three from Lisa Maier (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg).
The game had 24 fouls called, including 16 against NIU.
"It hurts when you lose, but we worked hard throughout the game," said head coach Carrie Barker. "Today's game was very physical and we let our emotions get the best of us. Every game that we have played this year has been a learning experience and this is another situation in which we can learn more about ourselves."
Toledo, the two-time defending MAC Tournament champions, has won the last seven meetings between the schools since 2003, including MAC Tournament semifinal contests each of the past two years.
The Huskies take to the road next weekend with a Friday match at Central Michigan and a Sunday contest at Eastern Michigan.
