DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team held its annual Red-White Game on a picturesque Saturday evening in DeKalb at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
In a useful workout for head coach John Ross and the Huskies ahead of their first exhibition game against IPFW on Tuesday, the Red team topped the White squad, 2-0. Junior forward Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and freshman forward Allie Ingham (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) combined to lead the Red team to victory, with both Huskies tallying a goal and an assist.
Gobbo, who led NIU last season with six goals, opened the scoring midway through the first half, receiving a nice pass from Ingham and finding the bottom left corner of the net with a powerful shot. Just before the break, Ingham doubled the Red lead with a simple finish after pouncing on a rebound from Gobbo’s strike.
Gobbo and Ingham almost combined for another goal in the opening period, but freshman goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) made an incredible save from point-blank range for the White team.
The Red squad also edged the White team in a post-game penalty shootout as the Huskies showed off their prowess from the penalty spot. Both teams scored their first five attempts from 12 yards out before Red finally prevailed in sudden death, 6-5.
Coach Ross and the Huskies now have a few more days of preseason training to prepare for an exhibition at IPFW on Tuesday at 6 p.m. NIU begins its regular season at defending Missouri Valley Conference champions Illinois State on Friday, Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. in Normal, Ill.
