HUSKIES PLAY 12 HOME MATCHES IN 2011
The NIU women's soccer team will host 12 home contests during the fall season, beginning Aug. 26 with a match versus South Dakota State. From Sept. 4 through Sept. 23, the Huskies will host five home matches. Included in that stretch of contests is Senior Day (Sept. 18) against Loyola and the Mid-American Conference opener versus Toledo (Sept. 23).
SCOUTING IOWA STATE
The Cyclones are coming off an 8-9-2 season in 2010, finishing 10th in the Big 12 with a 3-7-0 record. The team returns a number of players from last year's team, including sophomores Emily Goldstein and Brittany Morgan, who each scored 10-plus points last season. Goldstein registered six goals and five assists (17 points) and Morgan accounted for five goals and one assist (11 points) to finish first and second, respectively, on the team scoring stat sheet.
Iowa State is opening its season Friday with a showdown at Drake. The match between Northern Illinois and ISU will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
NIU Head Coach Carrie Barker will be entering her fourth season at the helm of the Huskies. In her three previous seasons, Barker has posted an overall record of 23-26-9 (.474) and a Mid-American Conference record of 11-16-6 (.424) and has led the program to the MAC Championship twice in the last three years.
YEAR FOUR, LET'S SCORE
The Huskies return their top-scorer from 2010 in senior Kelsey Passaglia, who registered four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points. In fact, Passaglia was the leading scorer in 2009 as well, contributing three goals and an assist. In her career she has recorded eight goals and four assists (20 points).
If the Cary, Ill., native records another season like she had in 2010, she'll land on Northern Illinois' career top-10 points list. Passaglia is a mere two goals shy of the No. 10 mark in career goals as well.
DRIVE MY CARR
While she was not part of the famed Fab Four, sophomore goalkeeper Amy Carr may be on track to have another stellar season between the pipes - and be a star. In her freshman campaign, Carr logged just over 1,685 minutes in net and accumulated a goals against average of 1.28 and made 71 saves. She was twice named the MAC's Player of the Week, claiming honors Sept. 20 and Oct. 26. The Hemel Hempstead, England native also accrued a 9-9-1 record and seven shutouts in 2010.
Before enrolling at NIU, Carr was a member of England's 2008 FIFA U17 World Cup squad that reached the semifinal of the tournament in New Zealand.
The Huskies will host the NIU Tourney Aug. 26 and 28, featuring North Dakota, South Dakota State and MAC foe Western Michigan. It will be NIU's first-ever match against the Fighting Sioux and the first contest against the Jackrabbits since 2006. A complete tournament schedule is listed below. NIU matches in italics.
