DEKALB, Ill. -
The Northern Illinois women's soccer team will begin its first full weekend of regular season competition Friday, when the Huskies travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the University of Iowa in a 7 p.m. contest at the inaugural Iowa Tournament. Competition at the tournament will continue for the Huskies on Sunday, Aug. 29, when NIU faces Northern Iowa in an 11 a.m. match-up at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
"This will be an exciting weekend," said NIU women's soccer head coach Carrie Barker. "This is our first road trip, a Friday night game against a top program. We look forward to competing in the Iowa Tournament."
The Huskies (1-0-0) enter the weekend, after opening their regular season schedule last Monday with a 1-0 victory over Creighton. In the contest, the Huskies outpaced their opponents in nearly every category. NIU outshot the Jays 12-6, while earning four shots on goal to their one, and held an eight to three edge in cornerkicks.
Iowa dropped a 2-0 decision to DePaul in its season opener on Friday, Aug. 20. The Hawkeyes enter the 2010 season after finishing 9-11 in 2009, and will return nine of their 11 starters to the 2010 squad. The Huskies will face the Hawkeyes for the first time since the 2007, where the teams battled to a scoreless draw.
NIU faces Northern Iowa for just the second time in program history. The Huskies faced the Panthers for the first time in 2008, where NIU claimed a 3-2 victory on the road. The win was part of the Huskies best start in school history (5-1-3) during the 2008 season, Barker's first year at NIU. UNI enters the weekend with a 0-1 start to season after falling to Iowa State, 3-1, in its season opener.
This weekend's contests are the first of three-straight road games for the Huskies, who will continue action on the road when they travel to Loyola on Sunday, Sept. 5. NIU will not return home until Sept. 10, when the Huskies host Illinois State in a 2:30 p.m. match-up.
