DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's soccer team (0-5-1) will return to action Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. as it hosts Eastern Illinois (1-5-1) at NIU Soccer & Track and Field Complex. The Huskies are still looking for their first win of the season and are coming off a brilliant performance against Soccer America's No. 24 team, Wisconsin.
NIU had one of its best defensive efforts of the season last Thursday against the Badgers, as goalkeeper Amy Carr and the Huskies back line - Taylor Conter, Lauren Eberts, Shelbi Johnson and Lauren Solomon - forced UW to take low-percentage shots. The team withstood heavy winds and 23 shots from Wisconsin but fell 2-0, with goals by the Badgers in the 31st and 90th minutes.
When NIU switched sides of the pitch in the second half, the Huskies were able to generate some offense with the wind at their back. The midfield sent volleys and long through balls to forwards Kelsey Passaglia and Corrine Frankenberg but were unable to find the back of the net.
Eastern Illinois played matches Friday and Sunday, defeating Western Illinois 1-0 for its first win of the season and dropping its contest against Valparaiso, 2-0. The Panthers triumphed over the Bulldogs when WIU's Laura Lins scored an own goal. EIU's top-scorer, Kristin Germann, has recorded four goals and an assist this season (nine points) to lead the Panthers.
The Huskies match versus the Panthers will begin at 4 p.m. at NIU Soccer & Track and Field Complex. Admission to the match is free.
