DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois' women's soccer team plays its final non-conference match of the 2007 season, hosting St. Francis (Pa.) in a 1 p.m. tilt Sunday at the Huskie Soccer Field. The match will air live on WLBK-AM (1360) and on www.niuhuskies.com.
NIU enters the game 2-2-2 on the season while the Red Flash begin weekend play with a 3-3 mark.
"This will be our last chance to work out some kinks and get prepared for MAC competition," said associate head coach Paul Jobson. "We just want to continue to get better both offensively and defensively as we head toward the conference season and be able to see how different players respond in different situations."
The Huskies are coming off a 1-1 tie at DePaul last Sunday and lead the MAC with a 0.459 goals against average. NIU's mark ranks 17th nationally after yielding just three goals in six matches, its lowest six-game goals allowed total since 2004.
Pacing the NIU offense is junior transfer Jestina Orlando (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South/North Dakota State), who leads the team with two goals on six shots this season. Maddie Lehman (St. Charles, Ill./North) is the team's second-leading scoring with a goal and an assist.
The Huskies will be facing St. Francis, a member of the Northeast Conference, for the first time on Sunday. Something familiar to NIU is playing extra time this season, having had three of its matches go to overtime, one more than all of the 2006 campaign.
"We know St. Francis will come out and battle after playing a tough match Friday at Northwestern," Jobson said. "Our approach to this game won't be any different than it has been for any of our other games this season."
