HUSKIE WOMEN COMPLETE LOST WEEKEND WITH 6-1 LOSS AT MARSHALL; NIU NOW 0-3-0 IN THE MAC

HUNTINGTON, WV---According to the atlas, the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team made its longest trip of the season this weekend. But the 550 miles weren't the only "long" portion of the trek as the Huskies endured a 6-1 loss at Marshall University here Sunday (Sept. 22).

Ashley Schillig notched a natural hat trick in the first half as Marshall leveled its overall record at 3-3-1 and improved to 1-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference while Northern Illinois fell to 2-6-0 on the season and remains winless (0-3-0) in the MAC.

Schillig opened the scoring at 19:19 off a Lindsay Jayjack pass, and the tandem joined forces again 16 minutes later when Jayjack set up Schillig's second strike at the 35:16 mark. Jayjack and Jaime Gruber combined to set the table for Schillig's third tally of the match---and fifth of the season---just 1:44 later to give Marshall a 3-0 lead.

Schillig's heroics came at the expense of reserve goalkeeper Akiko Iwabuchi (Urawa City, Japan / Barrington), who was pressed into duty with Leigh Steigerwald (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) and Carrie Dvorak (Granger, IN / Marian) both sidelined due to injury.

The margin grew to 4-0 on a Lauren Scott marker at 55:40 and Lindsay Stelter collected two goals in a three-minute span as the Thundering Herd built a 6-0 cushion with 15 minutes remaining. Northern Illinois averted the shutout when Chanelle Crosby (Englewood, CO / Littleton Arapahoe) notched her second goal of the season. Crosby beat MU goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods after taking a pass from fellow freshman Kelly Kelso (Middleton, WI).

Despite that marker, however, NIU was outscored 11-2 over the weekend, including a 5-1 loss at Ohio University on Friday (Sept. 20). And the Huskies' troubles increased when junior midfielder Maggie Nowicki (Naperville / Central) was injured and taken to a local hospital for x-rays on her right leg.

"We could make a lot of excuses---we're young, it's a long road trip, we're missing our goalkeeper---but the bottom line is that we knew what we need to do, and we didn't do it," Northern Illinois coach Frank Horvat said. "Marshall came out and did what they had to. We're a better team than this. We're better than we were last year, but we need to show it."

"We misrepresented ourselves and the university this weekend," Horvat admitted. "Now we've lost another key player, one of our steadier players. We're at a turning point in the season right now. We have to hold ourselves accountable and take responsibility for where we are. If we don't recover quickly and make a commitment to each other as a team, we're going to be in trouble."

The Huskies continue Mid-Am play Friday (Sept. 27) with a 3 p.m. match at Eastern Michigan University. The road swing concludes next Sunday (Sept. 29) when NIU visits Central Michigan University for a 1 p.m. contest.
