NIU Women's Soccer Struggles In Second Half And Falls 2-1 To Eastern Michigan

DeKalb, IL - Northern Illinois University's women's soccer team dropped its fifth Mid-American Conference game of the season falling to Eastern Michigan University 2-1. The Eagles scored two second-half goals to pull out the win.

"We definitely wanted it today (October 16)," said interim head coach Paul Jobson, who wass filling in for head coach Marci Miller while she is in California training with the U.S. National Team. "Second games of the weekend are always tough. It took us a bit to get our legs under us, but then we looked real good."

NIU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Elaine Eliadis (Orland Park / Carl Sandburg) scored her third goal of the season in the 34th minute. Eliadis, who has come off the bench the last two games, has been able to change the look of the Huskie offense.

"She (Eliadis) adds a spark off the bench," commented Jobson. "She could easily start for us. She changes our offense when she comes in, because she is different than our other forwards. This forces the defense to adjust to our change and alter their strategy."

"I have to prove myself to get my starting job back," said Eliadis. "You have got to be a spark when you come in off the bench. I have been getting good feeds from my teammates and been able to score."

Eastern Michigan came out hot in the second half scoring two goals in a ten-minute span to defeat the Huskies. EMU's Lauren Clyne notched the Eagles' first goal off a feed from Kate Simpson. Then at 73:44, Michele Lawrence spun around the Huskie defense and found the back of the net to give the EMU a 2-1 lead and the eventual victory.
NIU kept the pressure on the Eagle defense and had many good scoring opportunities late in the game but was unable to get any to fall.

"We had good chances today," noted Jobson. "It just didn't fall for us. Christie (Ehrhardt (Addison / Roselle Lake Park)) missed a header high and Elaine (Eliadis) hit the cross bar. This is just the MAC. Some days you play well and the goals just don't fall for you."

The Huskies are on the road this week with contests on Friday (October 21) against Ball State University and Sunday (October 23) vs. Miami (Ohio) University.
