Last Second Goal Leads Redhawks Past Huskies
In the dying embers of regulation time and the match tied 2-2, Miami's Kelsey Dinges headed a ball past Northern Illinois goalkeeper Amy Carr into the near post netting to lift the Mid-American Conference leaders, 3-2, over the Huskies.
REDHAWK TO WATCH
Kayla Zakrzewski has done it all for the Redhawks this season. The senior midfielder has five goals and six assists so far to lead the team in points with 16. Among her five goals, three have been of the game-winning variety. Two of those difference-makers came during MAC affairs as she scored in the team's 1-0 victory against Kent State and in the 1-0 victory against Eastern Michigan.
ABOUT BALL STATE
The Cardinals have showcased a very tough defense this season, shutting out the opposition seven times already. Ball State has allowed just nine goals this season while scoring 19. The +10 differential has led to the Cardinals' 9-4-1 season record with a 4-2-0 record in the MAC, good for third in the conference.
CARDINALS TO WATCH
Both Ball State goaltenders have produced superb years as the two have split the starts evenly so far. Layne Schramm has a goals-against average of 0.41 with four shutouts to her credit. Dennis Brooke has allowed only six goals in the games that she has started, and she has three shutouts within her stat line.
NIU is 4-11-1 all time against Miami (Ohio). When the two teams faced off in 2012, the Huskies lost a tight match in a 3-2 final. NIU has historically faired better against Ball State with a 5-6-3 record during the program's history. Last season, the Huskies fell 1-0 to the Cardinals.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HUSKIES
NIU had trouble scoring in two road matches last weekend. On Friday, October 11, they took on Bowling Green, and the game ended in a scoreless tie. That following Sunday, October 13, NIU lost against Central Michigan 3-0 after giving up three goals early on.
GOBBO LIKES THE MAC
Nicole Gobbo has been NIU's most reliable scoring option since the beginning of MAC play. Gobbo has four goals in six MAC games this season. She leads the team in goals scored with six goals overall.
HUNT FOR THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
NIU currently stands at No. 8 in the conference with a 2-3-1 MAC record. The Huskies need to at least stay in that eighth slot in order to secure a first round match in the MAC tournament. With five games remaining, NIU is currently ahead of Toledo (2-4-0), Akron (1-4-1), Buffalo (1-5-0), and Bowling Green (0-5-1). The team is also just single point below Ohio (2-2-2)
NEXT TIME FOR WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Huskies are done with regular season road games after this weekend. Next weekend, they'll host Kent State on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. and Ohio on Sunday, October 25 at 1 p.m.
