WOMEN SEE TOURNEY HOPES END WITH 3-1 LOSS AT TOLEDO; SKID REACHES FIVE
IN A ROW
OH---Northern Illinois University women's soccer fans can cancel their
postseason travel plans. The Huskies had their hopes of qualifying for
the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament dashed Friday (Oct.
25) as the University of Toledo defeated the Huskies, 3-1.
Illinois was mathematically eliminated from contention for the MAC summit
with its fifth consecutive loss, falling to 5-11-0 overall and 3-8-0 in
the league. Toledo remains in the hunt for a seventh or eighth seed as
the Rockets improved to 4-5-2 in the MAC and 8-6-2 overall.
were able to score on their half-chances and we didn't," Northern
Illinois coach Frank Horvat lamented. "We created five or six good
scoring chances but were only able to score on one. Their experience showed
today, as their players came out and did what was necessary."
nearly broke on top in the second minute of the contest as Katie Klaas
(Cherry Valley / Rockford Christian Life) sent a drive off the crossbar
but no teammate was able to collect the rebound opportunity. UT regrouped
and took a 1-0 lead at 38:29 when Sarah Crane lifted a shot past Huskie
goalkeeper Leigh Steigerwald (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas)
from 16 yards out. Crane worked through the slippery conditions for a
perfectly-struck ball just under the crossbar and inside the left post
for her second goal of the year. Toledo outshot NIU 9-3 in the opening
45 minutes but that was the lone tally before intermission.
Illinois answered just 2:34 into the second half when Denise Papke (New
Lenox / Lincoln-Way) pulled the Huskies even with her second goal of the
year. Chanelle Crosby (Englewood, CO / Littleton Arapahoe) pushed a crossing
pass in front of the net, with Papke able to steer a shot past Elise Donovan
for the equalizer. NIU had several chances to take the lead but attempts
from Katie Kieffer (Rockford / Christian Life) and Crosby missed the target
and Donovan stopped another try from Crosby.
pulled ahead 2-1 when Melissa Lesage connected from 12 yards out at 56:33.
The Huskies were unable to clear the ball from their own zone, allowing
Brittany Lawrence to serve a pass in front of the net. Lesage pounced
on the loose ball and her shot deflected off a Huskie defender behind
Steigerwald for her tenth goal of the fall. Corrie Hasenjager put the
match out of reach by converting a penalty kick at 75:32, her eighth marker
of the season.
did some good things in creating chances, but we didn't finish,"
Horvat said. "It wasn't from lack of effort. Unfortunately, that's
the difference, and it has been the difference between winning and losing.
You're not going to get respect until you win."
Huskies wrap up the MAC schedule Sunday (Oct. 27) at Bowling Green St.
University. NIU can play the role of spoiler in the 1 p.m. match, with
BGSU looking to clinch a first-round home date with a victory. Northern
Illinois closes the season Wednesday (Oct. 30) when DePaul University
comes to DeKalb for a 2 p.m. non-conference match.
