CLEVELAND, Ohio - The votes are in, Alex Elias (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) has become the fourth ever women's soccer player at NIU to be named to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team. Elias is the first Huskie to be a part of this team since Lauren Ebert received the honor in 2009.
"Elias came into this season prepared to play," said Head Coach John Ross. "She made the most out of her opportunities, and she has a bright future here at NIU."
Elias started the season in the second unit for the Huskies, bringing energy to the team later in the game. After the first four games though, she forced her way into the starting lineup. Elias started 15 of the last 16 games that NIU played, appearing in all 20 games overall.
"We put her into the starting lineup when she got more comfortable," said Ross. "Once she got acclimated to the college lifestyle, she was able to handle a starting role."
The Phoenix, Ariz. native scored her first collegiate goal to tie up NIU's game against Lewis, a match that the Huskies went on to win 2-1.
Elias was the only Huskie selected as part of any of the all-conference teams in the MAC this year. She helped the Huskies post a 6-11-3 overall record in 2013. The team was very tough to beat at home, producing a 6-1-1 record in front of the DeKalb crowd. The Huskies made the postseason for consecutive seasons for the first time since the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
