CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Northern Illinois University softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Boston University in its final game of the USF Tournament at Eddie C. Moore Field Sunday.

Boston (14-8) opened the scoring with a run in the third and added an insurance run in the seventh. Northern Illinois' (12-13) offense was unable to get anything going on the day as the Huskies were held to one hit, a leadoff single by Shelby Miller (Ottawa, Kan./Ottawa) in the top of the fifth. Miller was the lone base runner for NIU.

Sunday's game with Boston marked the end of a nine-game road trip to Florida for NIU. While the trip didn't end the way the Huskies wanted it to, it was a success trip. Northern Illinois finished week with a 5-4 record, outhitting its opponents, .276 to .204.

Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) led the Huskies, hitting .400 going 12-of-30 from the plate including a triple and home run. She had nine runs batted in and seven runs scored. Miller was right behind her, hitting at a .370 clip with a double, a home run and six RBIs and three runs scored.

Pitcher Megan Dortch (Reno, Nev./Bishop Manogue) posted a 1.97 earned run average, and tallied 50 strikeouts going 3-3 in six appearances, including five starts. Jessica Sturm (Wichita, Kan./Goddard) improved to 3-2 on the season, going 2-1 in four starts and five appearances. NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard was very pleased with her performance against South Florida.

"Jess did a really good job in her outing," she said. "She moved the ball around and kept the hitters off balance and spotting pitches. She did a great job against USF."

NIU returns to the diamond Tuesday, March 27, when the Huskies welcome Illinois State to Mary M. Bell Field for the home opener. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Central Time. Fans can follow all the action live on Gametracker via NIUHuskies.com.
