AKRON, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University softball team continued its run at a Mid-American Conference title when it scored a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Ball State in Game 13 of the 2013 MAC Softball Tournament at Firestone Stadium Saturday.
Northern Illinois (28-29) will face No. 3 seed Central Michigan in Game 14 of the 2013 MAC Softball Tournament in Akron, Ohio. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. CT and fans can follow all the action live at the 2013 MAC Softball Tournament Central.
A three-run second inning proved to be the difference for the Huskies over Ball State (37-17). Ashley Kopp led off the inning with a double to left field. She was moved over to third on a sacrifice by Emily Norton (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest). Kopp scored when Erika Oswald (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) reached on a Cardinal error to tie the game at 1-1. With two on and two outs, Nicole Gremillion (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) tripled to left field to drive in a pair and give NIU a 3-1 lead.
Ball State struck first with a run in the top of the first. Loren Chilar led off the inning with a single through the right side. After two fly outs, Taylor Rager singled and Amanda Carpenter singled to left field to drive in Chilar from second. Carpenter was thrown out at third before a second run could score, however, Chilar's run scored to give Ball State a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals got a run back in the top of the fifth on a RBI double by Jennifer Gilbert. Norton and the Huskie defense kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard the rest of the way to keep its MAC championship hopes alive.
