AKRON, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University softball team dropped a 16-1 decision to No. 2 seed Ball State in its second game of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio Thursday.
With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Ball State (41-14) took a 3-1 lead with a two-run inning. The Cardinals would then take command, putting up a four spot in the top of the sixth. Leading 4-1, Ball State's Hannah Zimmerman led off the inning with a double, and Jessie Ware singled up the middle moving Zimmerman to third while taking second on the throw. Lisa Rozanksi cleared the bases with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a Huskie error.
Rozanski scored the third run of the inning on a triple by Amanda Carpenter. Carpenter capped off the inning when she scored on a wild pitch to give Ball State an 8-1 advantage. The Cardinals tacked on eight more runs in the seventh to cruise to the victory.
A day after scoring six runs on eight hits, NIU (23-33) struggled offensively, scoring one run on four hits. The Huskies' lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third when a Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) sacrifice fly drove in Kate Welsh (Wilmington, Ill./Bishop McNamara) from third.
The Huskies will face No. 4 seed Ohio Friday at 10 a.m. CST. NIU split the season series with Ohio earlier this season, winning the series opener, 6-3, before losing 6-5 to the Bobcats in the series finale in Athens, Ohio. NIU and Ohio have met twice before in the MAC Tournament, with both meetings coming in 2002 and both Bobcat victories.
