DEKALB, Ill. - After spending almost a month and a half on the road, the Northern Illinois University softball team opens the home portion of its schedule with a pair of games against in-state foes this week at Mary M. Bell Field.
"Being able to practice outside last week and get used to our new infield surface has gotten the team really excited for our first home games," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "There is always something new and exciting about playing on your home field for your home fans for the first time."
The Huskies (6-15) will face Western Illinois in a doubleheader Tuesday and will take on Northwestern in a single game Thursday in a single game. The first game of the doubleheader with the Leathernecks begins at 3 p.m. with the second game immediately to follow, while the first pitch of the Huskies and Wildcats is scheduled for 4 p.m.
"The level of collegiate softball in Illinois has been steadily rising and I expect to see some great competition for the team this week," Chouinard said. "Western Illinois has had a very successful past two years and Northwestern is a top contender every year. It will be a great challenge and opportunity for the team to show what they're capable of."
Northern Illinois returns home after spending the weekend in Tampa, Fla. at the USF The Game Tournament where the Huskies went 2-3, posting back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) had productive weekends at the plate. Parrish was 7-for-13 including a triple and a home run, and drove in four runs, while Sinner also knocked in four runs, going 3-for-12 from the plate.
