Senior third baseman Michelle Nendza leads the NIU softball team in almost every offensive category through 18 games and is one home run shy of tying her 2006 career single season-high of seven. The Palos Park, Ill. native took some time out of her day to let Huskie fans learn more about herself.
What is the toughest thing about being a student-athlete at NIU?
Just keeping up with school and finding time to study.
What do you enjoy most about being here at NIU?
My team, we really have a good time together, and playing the games.
What is your most memorable moment in your four years?
Playing Akron at the 2006 MAC tournament, Bailey (Ouellette) and I hit back-to-back home runs and we won the game in the last inning.
If you could accomplish one thing at NIU, what would it be?
I would love to win a MAC championship.
What is your favorite phrase or saying uttered by one of your coaches?
My high school volleyball coach would say, "You have nothing to lose and everything to gain."
Do you have any rituals for the batter's box?
Before I step up to the plate I take a deep breath, squeeze my handle, hit my bat and then I step into the batter's box.
Who has been your biggest inspiration during your career? Why?
My parents. They are very supportive and encouraging.
What advice have you given to incoming student-athletes?
Soak it up because it goes by fast.
What is your favorite sport to play or watch besides softball?
I played volleyball in high school and I was pretty good.
What is your favorite part of game day, besides the game?
I like getting dressed, doing my hair and actually putting on the uniform with some music playing.
What is your goal for the rest of the season?
To have a great season. It is my last one so I just want us to do great.
How does it feel to hit a home run?
Like nothing you can explain. I can't say a million dollars but it is truly sweetness.
What is your favorite class right now?
They are all physical therapy classes so they are very similar. I love them all.
What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you on or off the field?
My first game ever freshman year I tripped over my cleats and fell flat on my face while chasing a foul ball.
The song I can't stop listening to right now is: Any thing by the Rascal Flatts.
I am the video game champion of: I'm not a champ, but when I get a chance to play Guitar Hero, I get hooked.
The TV show I can't stop watching is: Biggest Loser.
My Favorite sports movie of all-time is: A League of Their Own.
Funniest teammate is: I would say they are all funny in different ways.
The words I try to live by are: I have it on my ceiling---"Last chance, it's now or never."
