DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University softball team will face Northwestern and UIC in a pair of midweek games this week.
The Huskies (13-25, 3-7) travel to Northwestern Tuesday and plays host to UIC Wednesday at Mary M. Bell Field. First pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 4 p.m., while Wednesday's game begins at 5 p.m. Both times are Central. Fans can follow all the action live via Gametracker on NIUHuskies.com.
"We're competing to be one of the best teams in Illinois," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "Hopefully we can ride this past weekend's success into Northwestern. They're having a great year. It's always a challenge."
Northern Illinois enters play this week looking to build on a series sweep of conference foe Eastern Michigan over the weekend. NIU came from behind in both games, winning Saturday, 6-3, and posting an 8-7 walk-off win Sunday.
Erika Oswald led the way for the Huskies in their weekend games with Eastern and Central Michigan batting .545 in four games for the Huskies this week, well above her season batting average of .260. Oswald went 6-for-11 on the week, including a double and a home run, driving in five runs and scoring five. She also tallied two stolen bases on the week.
The Glenview, Ill. native played a key role in NIU's 6-3 victory over Eastern Michigan to snap an eight-game losing streak. She gave NIU a 4-3 lead on a two-RBI single. She went 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored in the Huskies first win of the Eagles series. Oswald went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored in the Huskies' 8-7 win over Eastern Michigan in the series finale.
"The amount of fight we showed this weekend shows we can be down but never out," Sutcliffe said. "We're going to continue to push no matter how our season is going and we're going to fight to the end."
