DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University softball team will head to Chicago Tuesday to face the UIC Flames in a midweek contest.
First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. and fans can follow the action live via Gametracker at NIUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (20-27, 8-10 MAC) are coming off of a 1-3 weekend, splitting a doubleheader against Kent State and dropped both games to Buffalo.
Jessica Sturm (Wichita, Kan./Goddard) held the Golden Flashes in check with a complete game shutout, while Rebecca Rupard’s (Normal, Ill./Normal West) two RBIs provided all the offense the Huskies would need en route to a 2-0 win. In game two, Jordyn Bowen (Libertyville, Ill./Grayslake) and Bryanna Phelan (Coal City Ill./Coal City) recorded half of the Huskies’ 10 hits, but KSU’s two runs in the 12th inning proved to be the difference in a 7-5 Huskie loss. The offense in the Buffalo series fell short, as NIU was outhit, 18-6, in the two games.
The Flames (12-24, 6-9 Horizon League) come in on a five-game skid, but are led by a potent offense hitting .300 as a team. Paige Peterson, Jacki Fletcher and Natalie Hernandez are all hitting above .400 for UIC, with Hernandez slugging .687 with eight home runs on the season.
NIU is looking to get back on track before a weekend slate of conference games at Ohio and Akron that will help determine Mid-American Conference Tournament seedings. NIU is currently in the eighth and final spot in the MAC, leading Bowling Green and Western Michigan by one game each.
