DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois head softball coach Lindsay Chouinard announced Thursday that she has resigned her post at the school after five years at the helm of the Huskie program.

Chouinard was appreciative of the opportunity to fulfill her dream of being a head coach and the support she received at Northern Illinois during her tenure.

"This has been an incredible experience," Chouinard said. "I am extremely grateful to Jim Phillips for giving me this opportunity and to Jeff Compher and the administration for their support. Being a head coach was a dream of mine. I'm just grateful for this opportunity and to have been able to work with these kids."

Compher thanked Chouinard for her service and what she and her staff have set in place at NIU.

"We are appreciative of the hard work and effort put forth by Lindsay and her staff over the last five years at NIU," Compher said. "They have laid a strong foundation for our softball program and we look forward to continuing to build upon it as we pursue championships at Northern Illinois. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors."

Chouinard compiled a 103-162 record in five seasons at NIU, highlighted by a 26-25 regular season mark in 2011. It was the first winning regular season since 2003. Under her tutelage, 14 Huskies earned conference accolades including seven first team All-MAC selections and five MAC All-Freshmen Team honorees. Northern Illinois advanced to the MAC Softball Tournament from 2009-11, reaching the semifinals in 2009 and 2010.

Compher said a national search for Chouinard's successor will begin as soon as possible.
