DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University assistant softball coach Tammy Williams has been invited to the 2010 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) and USA Softball announced this week.
"I'm very happy for Tammy," NIU head softball coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for her and we wish her nothing but the best."
Williams, who is in her first year at NIU, is one of 31 athletes who will be competing for the 17-member team or as an alternate to Team USA. Camp will be held in Chula Vista, Calif. and runs from January 4-8, 2010.
Williams, a standout at Northwestern, started all 232 games at shortstop for the Wildcats from 2006-09. The two-time Big Ten Player of the Year (2008 & 2009), Williams is Northwestern's all-time home run leader with 57 round-trippers, breaking the previous record of 55. Williams also owns NU's career records for hits (310), batting average (.419) and runs (235), as well as numerous single-season records. She finished the 2009 season with 15 home runs and was ranked ninth in the nation in home runs per game (0.33) and 10th in slugging percentage (.839).
The Huskies open their 2010 season in San Marcos, Texas where they will participate in the Texas State Tournament starting Feb. 12, 2010 versus Oklahoma State.
