DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University softball head coach Lindsay Chouinard announced the signing of five softball players for the 2012 team.
"We could not be more excited for the arrival of the 2011 class," Chouinard said. "This group is extremely talented and is going to have an immediate impact at NIU. Just as important as talent, they are great people who come from great families.
"Megan, Ally, Bryanna, Kaitlyn and Kristyn love the game of softball and take tremendous pride in the way they play the game. They are respectful, responsible and hard working girls who are going to mesh perfectly with the direction of this program."
Chouinard inked pitchers Megan Dortch of Reno, Nev. and Allyson Hecht from Huntington Beach, Calif. and a trio of outfielders in Bryanna Phelan of Coal City, Ill. and twins Kaitlyn and Kristyn Barrett of Monticello, Ill.
Dortch is a two-time all-state selection in Nevada, who currently holds the state record for most strikeouts in a game with a 19. On the mound, her 16-9 record at Bishop Manogue, 0.94 ERA and 165 strikeouts led the way for the Miners as the squad earned its first regional win since joining 4A. A member of the California Breeze, Dortch went 3-0 and added one save in the club's run to finishing seventh at the 2010 ASA Nationals.
Hecht, a two-time Sunset League selection and All-CIF second-team honoree as a sophomore, is in the process of rewriting the Edison High School record book with her play in the circle. In three seasons she holds the record for most career strikeouts (284), lowest career ERA (1.85), most strikeouts in a season (109), and lowest single season ERA (0.88). While with the Explosion 18 Gold travel squad, Hecht has compiled a 65-16 record during the past two years.
During her career at Coal City High School, Phelan has led the Coalers to a 98-4 record, a 2A state championship in 2010, and a third place finish in 2009. A three-time Herald News all-area selection, last season she led the Coalers to an undefeated season by hitting .450 with 15 RBIs and tallying the third-highest single-season run total in Illinois history with 77, while also swiping 21 bases. As a member of the Stone City Sharks travel club in New Lenox, Ill., Phelan has enjoyed success at the national level with a 2008 WAFA national championship, a second place finish at the 2009 NAFA Nationals, and another national championship in 2010 at the ASA Class A national tournament.
Chouinard also added twin sisters, Kaitlyn and Kristyn Barret of Monticello High School. Kaitlyn Barrett earned second-team Decatur Herald and first-team News Gazette honors as a junior. An all-around player, as a junior she received Monticello's Offense Award by batting .541 with 59 hits, 42 runs, 25 RBIs and stole 44 bases.
Kristyn Barrett was a third-team Decatur Herald and second-team News Gazette selection as a junior. Last season with the Sages, she hit .382 with 38 runs, 24 RBIs, while swiping 28 bases.
The Huskies open the 2011 season in Austin, Texas where they will participate in The Texas Tournament starting Feb. 11 vs. Tulsa.
