Huskies Shut Out the Braves 7-0
Feb. 5, 2012
PEORIA, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team picked up its fourth win of the season by sweeping the Bradley Braves 7-0 on Sunday at the Clubs at River City. This marks the first time in over two years the Huskies have shut out an opponent and gave the young team its second win of the weekend that saw three matches played. "We were all business today," said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "It was nice to see. Winning on Sunday during a three-day road trip is hard to do. We took care of business and did not look back." The singles play of the Huskies was impressive, with not one player dropping a set, as they sent down all six members of the Braves in order. Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Isreal/Alliance) improved her winning streak to six as she made quick work of BU's Carly Miles, 6-1, 6-4. This also marks her fifth straight match without dropping a set. Also adding victories to the Huskies' stat sheets were seniors Sara McLaughlin (Moline, Ill./Moline) and Emily Rogers (Rochester, Minn./Century), who defeated the Braves' Adele Henke 6-4, 6-1 and Corey Mattson 6-1, 6-3, respectively. Sophomore Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) took out Elizabeth Przystawski 6-0, 6-2. Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) earned her fourth win of the season while beating Meredith McDonagh 6-2, 6-0. Rounding out the singles victors was freshman Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia), who defeated Jessie Bertino 6-2, 6-1. The doubles play was once again solid for the Huskies as all three pairings earned victories. Duos McLaughlin/Rogers and De La Torre/Youel both earned 8-4 wins over Bradley's teams of Mattson/Rodefeld and Henke/Miles. The tandem of Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College) and Dekkinga picked up their second straight doubles victory while shutting out the grouping of Bertino/McDonagh. The Huskies will play next Sunday, Feb. 12, in Rockford, Ill., against the Panthers of Eastern Illinois. This will mark the first home match of the season for the Huskies.
