GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team captured the doubles point, and recorded wins at the No. 1, third, No. 4 and fifth singles positions, cruising to a 5-2 win over host Green Bay Saturday, the Huskies' first win of the 2010 spring season.

"It wasn't the prettiest tennis that we've played today, but it's the toughest I've seen our kids play in a long time," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We really battled, and winning the doubles point was huge for our confidence.

"Our new doubles teams gained a lot more experience today, and I was really proud of how our freshmen played, both picking up wins in singles. It was a blue-collar victory; Green Bay came out hot, and once we cooled them down, we found a way to scratch out our first win."

Brooke Forsberg and Emily Rogers teamed at No. 1 doubles to post an 8-4 win, followed by an identical 8-4 pro-set victory by Kathryn Friedlund and Sara McLaughlin at No. 2. NIU's freshman tandem of Brittni Fausett and Kelly Phillips fell in a hard-fought 8-7 decision at the third doubles flight.

In singles play, the Huskies recorded convincing straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5. Rogers posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Green Bay's Morgan Weuve; Fausett cruised in a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Laura Bartingale, and Phillips defeated the Phoenix's Rebecca Nelson, 6-4, 6-1. Friedlund, playing No. 1 singles, posted a three-set (5-7, 6-3, 10-8) win over Emily Lawent.

Northern Illinois will be idle next weekend, before taking on Eastern Illinois at Clocktower Resort in Rockford on Feb. 21.
