ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Huskies improved to 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Boylan Tennis Center against the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars, winning the match 4-3. It was quite the battle, and NIU's players were often put to the test by the opposition, but the Huskies hung in there and got the individual victories needed to pull out a match victory.

"This was a very tough much," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell." "We went up against a very talented team, and they're going to have a great year. We were able to stick with it and get some tiebreaks to put us ahead."

The Huskies and Cougars started off with doubles play, an area in which NIU excelled on the day. The Huskies took the point thanks to efforts in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre remained unbeaten in doubles play together, as they won the No. 1 match against Cougars Kali Donner and Monique Krutak in a 6-4 final. Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald claimed the No. 2 match against Mia Frogner and Sierra Halverson in a 6-2 winning effort. NIU held a 1-0 edge after doubles play.

Singles play is where the Cougars really turned up the heat. They took the No. 1 and No. 2 matches in the affair, and forcing NIU to get points elsewhere in the match. De la Torre responded to the pressure against Donner in a very close No. 3 match, winning 6-1, 2-6, (10-8).

Cristina Alvarez also had a tough match. In the No. 5, she took on Haley Ilcewicz. The standard two sets were not enough, but in the super tiebreak, Alvarez was dominant, taking the match in a 6-3, 4-6, (10-2) final. Stephanie McDonald added a point for the Huskies by taking the No. 6 against Sierra Halverson, 6-1, 6-3. McDonald is now 3-0 in singles matches this year. With the three singles victories, the Huskies took the match, 4-3.

The Huskies will get back to the courts on Saturday, February 8 to face Cleveland State. Another afternoon affair, NIU will face the Vikings at 1:00 p.m. at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
