ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team took on the Cleveland State on Saturday at the Boylan Tennis Center. Yesterday, Friday February 7, the Huskies bested the SIU-Edwardsville 4-3, and in an afternoon match against the Vikings, they found the similar results as it was once again a 4-3 victory in favor of NIU, improving the team's record to 3-1.

"We played great in doubles, but then took our foot off the gas in and let CSU back in the match," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We need to get better at kicking them when they're down. We will continue to work and improve."

For the second straight day, the Huskies took the doubles point to begin the match, and this one came a bit easier than the point of Friday. NIU swept the opposition in doubles play. Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre continued their strong start to 2014 in doubles play by defeating Kara Sherwood and Alex Bush, 7-5. The NIU tandem is 4-0 this year.

Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald picked up the win in the No. 2 when Alex Power and Princess Gbadamosi fell to the NIU duo, 6-3. Maria Rozo and Cristina Alvarez won in the No. 3, besting Ellen Folkers and Mathilde Orange, 6-4.

Singles play was tough for the Huskies in this match. NIU claimed three matches here, but they didn't come easy. Youel won a back-and-forth match against Sherwood in the No. 1, 6-0, 4-6, (10-6). Dekkinga pulled off a nice comeback in the No. 2 culminating in a close super tiebreak to end it, as she won 2-6, 6-2, (10-8). The Huskies got just enough to get ahead here, as the three singles victories gave the team four points and a 4-3 victory.

The women's tennis team is off next weekend, so they'll have two weeks to prepare for a match at Bradley on Saturday, February 22. The Huskies will face the Braves at 1:00 p.m.
