Huskies Defeat IUPUI, 6-1, For Third Straight Win

INDIANAPOLIS - Northern Illinois lost just nine games in its five singles wins and claimed the doubles point to defeat IUPUI 6-1 in women's tennis action Friday night at the West Indy Racquet Club. The victory was Northern Illinois' third straight and improved the Huskies' spring dual meet record to 6-1. Northern Illinois' No. 6 singles player, Stephanie McDonald, posted the "double bagel" win, while Cristina Alvarez lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5. NIU No. 1 player Nelle Youel continued her undefeated string this spring with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shelby Hullett and paired with Arantza De La Torre for an 8-1 win to keep her perfect record intact at No. 1 doubles. Haley Dekkinga won her singles match at No. 2 for the sixth time in seven matches. Mary Malkin also improved her singles record to 6-1 on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. Malkin and Alvarez teamed up to help NIU win the doubles point with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles. "We showed better focus and played intelligently today," said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We are working on setting up a game plan and sticking to it. I saw some things out there today, but we still have a ways to go." Northern Illinois has a quick turnaround before taking on the University of Indianapolis Saturday at the UIndy Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m. (CT). Northern Illinois concludes its weekend in Indiana versus Butler (2-7) Sunday at the Butler Bubble, located behind historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, at 9 a.m. (CT).
