Tulsa, OK -- For the Northern Illinois University women's tennis squad a long trip west resulted in a split verdict as the Huskies defeated Oral Roberts University but fell to weekend host University of Tulsa.
On Saturday (March 4), the Huskies opened up with a 5-2 triumph over ORU's Titans in which coach Pontus Hiort saw several reasons for optimism. But on Sunday, Tulsa's Golden Hurricanes -- ranked 75th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association ratings for all Division I programs -- blew that positive vibe away with a 7-0 shutout.
"Against Oral Roberts, we played well in both singles and doulbes by winning the big points or getting a crucial shot that we needed," Hiort noted. "But against a much more experienced and talented team like Tulsa, we just weren't sharp enough. Any time you play a ranked team, you have to elevate your game that much more. They hit the ball harder and with better pace, not to mention they have quality players throughout their line-up. It's a great opportunity to improve by having to take your game up, I just don't believe we did all that we're capable."
In the Oral Roberts match, the Huskies got off to a 1-0 start by capturing the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches. At the top slot, Nao Uememura (Kasugai-schi Aehi, Japan / Kardina International) and Lilian Asuaje (Monterrey, Mexico / American School Foundation of Monterrey) were decisive 8-1 victors while the No. 3 tandem of Dora Delgadillo (San Luis Potosi, Mexico / Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios) and Chrissy Nagel (Millstadt / Belleville West) were 8-3 winners,'
In singles, NIU ace Jenny Edner (Stocksund, Sweden / Kramforsgymnasiet) picked up a win when her ORU foe had to retire due to injury. Asuage was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at No. 3 while Uememura flipped those sets in her win at No. 4. At No. 5 singles, Megan Brooks (Aurora / West) followed up a 6-4 first-set victory by hanging on for a 7-5 second set triumph. In the No. 6 singles position, Nagel fell short in a third-set tiebreaker.
Against the extremely talented Tulsa crew, Northern Illinois got swept in doubles, but the No. 2 combination of Brooks and Edner had the closest battle, losing 8-4. In singles, Brooks came back from a 6-3 first-set loss to extend her opponent to a tiebreaker before the host Hurricanes were able to sweep through the singles matches for the shutout.
Northern Illinois takes a brief break from action to get classes squared away before a spring break training trip to Florida will include a trio of matches. The opener is a Tuesday (March 14) 3 p.m. contest against Colgate University at Daytona Beach, FL. In addition, the NIU women have a March 15 date with the University of North Florida plus a March 17 contest against Jacksonville University.
