CHICAGO, Ill. - The Huskies took on the Chicago State Cougars (4-10) on Thursday night in their second installment of a six-match road stretch. It was a tough battle, and NIU eventually fell, 4-2. With the loss, NIU's record drops to 4-4.

"Chicago played like a team possessed," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We fought them off as well as we could, but it just wasn't enough."

NIU started off doubles play as desired. Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre quickly claimed a victory over Faith Huckabee and Bolado Gema Yusta in the No. 1, 8-1. It was the fifth victory of the year for the Huskie tandem as they now hold a 5-3 record.

Trouble came in the rest of doubles. Stephanie McDonald and Haley Dekkinga fell to Kirsa Utech and Carynne Lloyd in the No. 2, 8-4. In the No. 3, Karyn Emeralda and Hanna Pnagestu bested Mary Malin and Ilse Pacheco, 8-3. This gave Chicago State the doubles point as the teams headed into singles with the Cougars up 1-0.

The Huskies had some strong individual showings in singles. Youel took down Utech in the No. 1, 7-5, 6-3. Youel had a rough start to the 2014 spring season, losing her first three matches. With this win, she has now won four of her last five, and her record is 4-4 this season.

Cristina Alvarez had dominating performance in the No. 5. She held Yusta off the board completely, winning 6-0, 6-0. De la Torre had a tough match against Huckabee in the No. 4. She won the first set, but after a losing a tight battle in the second set, de la Torre went on to drop the contest in a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 final. The Huskies won two singles matches, but that wasn't enough as the final score read 4-2 in favor of the Cougars.

"Our attitude is right," added Ferrell. "Our effort is right. Things really aren't going our way right now. We'll keep working in Atlanta."

The Huskies are headed to Georgia for spring break. On Sunday, March 9, NIU will be at Georgia Gwinnett in Atanta, Ga. for a morning match at 11:00 a.m. On the following Monday, March 10, the Huskies will head to Gainesville, Ga. to take on Brenau at 4:00 p.m. Both times listed are central.
