Jacksonville, FL -- Combining an extra measure of outdoor experience with talent and depth was enough of a winning formula to boost the University of North Florida to a 7-0 shutout over the Northern Illinois University women's tennis squad in Wednesday's (March 15) spring break outing.
The Huskies, once again being forced to forfeit a doubles contest as well as the No. 6 singles point, came up on the empty end of a 7-0 match with UNF's Lady Ospreys. The hosts, who are among the Atlanic Sun Conference leaders at 5-1, improved to 11-5 overall while dropping the visiting NIU squad to 4-9. After a scheduled practice day, on Thursday (March 16) Northern Illinois completes its spring break competition schedule on Friday (March 17) with a 2 p.m. (CST) visit to Jacksonville University.
Although North Florida's top doubles duo of Catalina Castillo and Florenica Torres were able to notch an 8-2 win over the Huskies' Jenny Edner (Stocksund, Sweden / Kramforsgymnasiet) and Dora Delgadillo (San Luis Potosi, Mexico / Intitue Tecnologico de Estudios), it took a Huskie forfeit at No. 3 doubles to give the hosts the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. That was because the NIU No. 2 tandem of Megan Brooks (Aurora / West) and Nao Uememura (Kasugai-schi Aehi, Japan / Kardina Internationa) were able to earn a hard-fought 8-6 triumph over UNF's Katja Brandt and Lauren Cockbill.
"That was the bright spot for us, otherwise we just weren't able to get things going. Especially in singles, we fell behind and just never recovered," NIU coach Pontus Hiort admitted. "North Florida's a very good team. They're deep and have accomplished players throughout their line-up, and with that kind of consistent and solid play, we just weren't able to mount a comeback."
From No. 1 through No. 5, North Florida registered decisive two-set sweeps to go with a forfeit at No. 6 singles. NIU's Lilian Asuaje (Monterrey, Mexico / American School Foundation of Monterrey) remained sidelined by strep throat forcing the Huskies to forfeit a doubles contest and move Brooks and Chrissy Nagel
(Millstadt / Belleville West) up to Nos. 4 and 5 in singles play.
