DEKALB – Sophomore Sara McLaughlin battled tough at No. 4 singles to post her sixth win of the season, and Kelly Phillips and Stephanie Okuma recorded their fourth victory at No. 3 doubles, but Mid-American Conference foe Toledo recorded a 6-1 dual match win over the Northern Illinois women’s tennis team (6-6, 0-1 MAC) in the Huskies’ MAC opener at the Huskie Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.

“We battled tough out there today and I cannot complain,” said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. “We had them on the ropes but Toledo is very well-coached. (Toledo head coach) Tracy Mauntler does a great job and they are a very good team. I’m proud of the way our girls played today and we need to have the same effort for the rest of the season. We are very excited to host Eastern Michigan tomorrow.”

Toledo (8-3, 1-0 MAC) captured the decisive doubles point by recording wins at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The Rockets’ Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis defeated NIU’s Brooke Forsberg and Emily Rogers 8-5 at the top doubles flight, while Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva outlasted McLaughlin and Kathryn Friedlund by the same score. McLaughlin and Friedlund had their two-match win streak at No. 2 doubles snapped.

Okuma and Phillips, playing together for the sixth time this season, tallied an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Silvia Carvajal and Melissa Reynolds. The duo has won four out of their last five doubles contests at the No. 3 position.

McLaughlin’s 7-6, 7-5 win over Zoubareva was her fourth win of the season at the No. 4 position. McLaughlin, who is now tied for second on the squad with six singles wins, has won four out of her last five contests overall.

The Rockets recorded straight-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions. At No. 3 singles, freshman Brittni Fausett dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision that snapped her four-match win streak.

NIU will continue MAC play tomorrow when the Huskies host Eastern Michigan at the Huskie Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CST.
