DeKALB, Ill. - The Huskies hosted the Eastern Michigan Eagles Saturday afternoon for their last match of season. It was hard fought battle on the outdoor courts at NIU, one that ended in a 6-1 loss for the home team. The defeat drops the Huskies record to 7-12 with a 1-7 MAC record.
"It was an amazing match," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We played so hard, and we were right there. We just came up short."
To begin the contest, each team got into their doubles pairings and fought over the first point of the match. Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald picked up a win for the Huskies in doubles play. They were forced to grind out a long battle against Mariya Toncheva and Daphne Friedrichs, eventually outlasting the Eagles 8-7. However, NIU's other tandems were not as successful. NIU dropped the other two matches, yielding the doubles point to the Eagles.
In singles, Nelle Youel got the Huskies on the board with a superb performance in the No. 1. She bested Klara Sperjova, 6-0, 6-2. NIU players nearly grabbed two other singles matches, but the Huskies fell short in both of these instances.
In the No. 5, Mary Malkin took the first set against Friedrichs, 6-3. Friedrichs came back to win the match however, 3-6, 6-3, (10-3). It was a similar story in the No. 6. Stephanie McDonald faced Maria Paula Ribero in the affair. McDonald took the first set in this one like Malkin, but latter half of the match was not kind to the Huskie, ending in a 3-6, 6-1, (10-4) loss. As a team, NIU dropped five of the six singles matches, bringing the final score to 6-1 in favor of Eastern Michigan.
"The future here is looking bright," added Ferrell. "Most of my top six is returning, and we four talented players coming in next fall."
This being the last match of the season for the Huskies, Ilse Pacheco and Haley Dekkinga have ended their careers with the team. Pacheco has been a frequent doubles player for the Huskies over her years at NIU. Dekkinga has been a mainstay at both singles and doubles in each of her four years at NIU. Ferrell will look to replace the contributions of these two with four incoming recruits. Among the four is Dekkinga's sister, Abigail Dekkinga.
