Women's Tennis Has Two Winners in Chicago State Invitational

Northern Illinois' women's tennis team attended the Chicago State Invitational tennis tournament over the weekend to start its fall season. NIU was one of seven teams to play in the invitational, and the team came away with two flight victories.

Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) was able to start her season strong with by winning the White Flight Singles bracket. She took down Bradley's Ashley Thai 6-1, 6-2 in the final. Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoz, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) also came out on top in all of her singles matches, taking down the Black Flight Singles bracket. She defeated Jordan Appel from the University of Chicago in two sets, scoring 6-3 and 6-2 in the final.

Outside of flight victories, the Huskies also had players make semi-final appearances, including Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Maria Rozo (Bogata, Columbia/Gimnasio Femenino). The doubles teams from NIU also made deep runs in their brackets. The duo of Youel/de la Torre made it to the final round of the Green Flight Doubles bracket before falling to Lanstak/Kranczicki (Lewis), 8-2. Rozo/Alvarez teamed up take third place in the White Flight Doubles bracket. Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College) also played together in the White Flight Doubles bracket, making it to the final round before dropping the match to Nguyen/Wetmore (Lewis), 8-6.

"It's clear that my players put in a lot of work over the summer," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "I love to see that. The effort they put in is encouraging for our season. If we can continue to like that, it should be a good season for us."

The Huskies have a couple weeks off before heading to the UWM Invitational on Friday, October 4. That will be a two-day tournament held in Whitewater, Wis.
