Oct. 1, 2011
KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Northern Illinois women’s tennis team finished its weekend at Western Michigan’s Fall MAC Invitational with five wins on Saturday. Facing Mid-American Conference opponents Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and host WMU, the Huskies came away from the weekend with six victories with a youthful team composed of six underclassmen and two seniors. “We played like we belonged today,” said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. “I was proud of the way the girls bounced back today. We played tough. We played good. We came out and got some wins. The team is starting to come together, which is good. We played much better today.” Haley Dekkinga and Nelle Youel earned their second win in as many days. The duo topped EMU’s Mariya Toncheva and Daphne Friedrichs 8-4. Both Huskies would then go on to win singles matches. Dekkinga took down BSU’s Ashlyn Rang 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (5). Youel did even better, beating UT’s Alexandra Cristello 6-4, 6-4 and then downing BSU’s Dena Boulieris 6-2, 6-1. The other Huskie that earned a victory was Arantza De La Torre, who topped WMU’s Caroline Aleck 6-2, 6-3.
