WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Huskies have completed their second event of the women’s tennis fall season, the Panther/Warhawk (UWM) Invitational. NIU competed against UW-Milwaukee, UW-Whitewater, Grand Valley State, Ferris State, UW-Green Bay, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology this weekend in singles and doubles play. By the end, NIU claimed three of the seven flights that the team competed in.

First up in the matches over the weekend was doubles play, and NIU had two doubles teams compete. The team of Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) finished first in the #1 Doubles flight to start the event strong for NIU. They defeated Ksenia Kuzmenko and Jana Luste from NJIT in the final, 8-2. Over in the #2 Doubles flight, Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocsean College) placed third after defeating Erika Willaims and Megan Humphreys, 8-4.

After doubles play concluded, singles play went underway. The Huskies excelled in singles play overall, reaching the final match in each of the flights they participated in. Two players, Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald, were able win their flights. Dekkinga defeated Kali Phillips of Grand Valley State (6-3, 6-3) to clinch the #2 Singles flight. McDonald defeated Kelly Trapp (6-4, 6-2), who also attends Grand Valley State, to win the final match of the #5 Singles flight. Youel, de la Torre, and Cristina Alvarez (Zarazoga, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) each made the final rounds of their flights as well.

"The team looked better this weekend," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "Out of seven possible finals, we were in six, and out of those six, we won three. This was some very tough tennis. We have a long way to go, but a nice foundation is being laid."

The Huskies will have a short break before the beginning of regionals, which start on Wednesday, October 9 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
