Midwest Regional Singles Draw
Doubles play began at the ITA Midwest Regional today at the Varsity Tennis Center of the University of Michigan. All doubles teams needed to win two straight matches to get into the second day of doubles play on Saturday, October 12. NIU had the duo comprised of Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) representing the Huskies in doubles play, and the team played a long, tough match. In the end, the two fell just short, dropping the match 8-7(4) to Mackenzie Bowman and Emily Mazzola from the University of Toledo in the first round.
"In tournaments like this, we need to go for it," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We played very well in the beginning, but then we played safe towards the end of the match and Toledo took advantage. We need to learn from this, and we will. Tomorrow is a new day, and we will be ready.
Youel and de la Torre also played a consolation match later in the day, but the end result was the same. The two opposed Zaina Sufi and Jarret Fisher of DePaul, falling 8-1. That brings an early end to the duo's play together in the Midwest Regional, but NIU will still be represented in singles play.
Singles play will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and Youel will be playing as the lone Huskie in the bracket. She must win her first two matches on the day to advance to the Round of 16 on Sunday, October 13. She's matched up against Gabriella DeSantis from Ohio State. Should she advance, Youel will face Ana Vladutu from DePaul.
