ROCKFORD, Ill. - Northern Illinois completed the first day of play in the Second Chance Regional today, held at the Boylan Tennis Center. Each bracket advanced a single round on Friday, and the Huskies had all of their participating players advance in the singles draws. However, over in the doubles draws, both NIU pairings were unable to pull out a victory.

Singles play went smoothly for NIU. Only one match went to three sets. Two players in particular, Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College), left little chance for the opposition to get on the board. Dekkinga defeated Stephanie Londre (WGB) without dropping a single point, taking the match 6-0, 6-0. McDonald beat Rachel Menos (WGB) 6-0, 6-2 to take her first match. All Huskie players advanced to the second rounds of the singles draws, which will take place on Saturday, October 12.

Doubles play was a different story for NIU. The team of Dekkinga/McDonald dropped the first match to Knoppe/Sharples (UIC) in an 8-5 final. Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria) and Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) fell to Kanner/Hernandez (MU) 8-1. The teams will be competing for fifth place in their draws on Saturday.

Play will resume on Saturday morning. The events on Saturday will set up the final matches set to begin on Sunday, October 13.
