ROCKFORD, Ill. -
Northern Illinois' women's tennis team continued its play in the Second Chance Regional at the Boylan Tennis Center on Saturday. After a solid first day for the Huskies in singles play, the second day did not go as well. While everyone won their first match on Friday, only Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) was able to come away with a win on Saturday, defeating Kathryn Sharples (UIC) 7-6, 6-1.
Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) took on Aedrielle Pendelton (UWM) in her second round match, but she fell 6-3, 7-5. Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria) dropped her second round match to Mariana Lacerda (UIC) 6-1, 6-3. Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College) was also eliminated in her second round match, which was against Ann Sophie Hahn (UIC). She was forced to withdraw due to injury and could not compete in her match. As such, she also cannot compete for third place. Alvarez and Pacheco will be playing for third place in their brackets on Sunday, October 13.
In doubles play the team of Mcdonald and Dekkinga lost a close one against Utech/Pangestu (CSU), 8-7. Alvarez and Pacheco dominated in their doubles match, defeating Menos/Miketinac (WGB), 8-0. They'll play Bolado//Huckabee (CSU) on Sunday for fifth place.
Play will resume in the regional tournament on Sunday morning. All that's left are the championship matches and final consolation matches. Following the completion of the event, the Huskies will have a small break before heading into the last event of the fall schedule, the NIU Invitational. It is set to begin on Friday, October 25 at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
