Women's Tennis Posts Five Wins in First Day of ITA Midwest Regionals

ITA Midwest Regional Day One Final Results Get Acrobat Reader

The Northern Illinois women's tennis picked up five individual wins, including four in the singles consolation draw, during day one of the ITA Midwest Regionals in Urbana, Ill., Friday.

Junior Kathryn Friedlund, sophomore Sara McLaughlin and freshmen Brittni Fausett and Kelly Phillips all shook off first-round singles losses with wins in the consolation draw to highlight the Huskies' performance in the afternoon portion of the event. To begin play in the consolation portion of the singles draw, Phillips defeated Eastern Illinois' Shannon Brooks in a 6-2, 6-2 decision. McLaughlin posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Emily Regenold from Bradley.

Fausett and Friedlund outlasted their respective opponents in three-set decisions. Sophomore Emily Rogers fell by a score of 6-3, 6-4 to IPFW's Yuka Kobayashi to wrap up NIU's representation in the consolation draw.

In doubles play, Fausett and Rogers combined for an 8-2 win over Bradley's tandem of Jessica Buterbaugh and Kelly Donahue in the main draw. The Huskies dropped the remaining three doubles matches, including an extra-session, 9-7 setback by Friedlund and McLaughlin versus Eastern Illinois.

Day two of the ITA Midwest Regionals will resume Saturday, with doubles play beginning at 8 a.m.
