DeKALB, Ill. - NIU's women's tennis team is set to play a pair of afternoon matches this weekend. The Huskies (1-1) will take on SIU-Edwardsville (2-1) at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 7 at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. On Saturday, February 8, NIU will get Cleveland State (0-4) for another 1:00 p.m. match.
The Huskies faced Wisconsin in their first road match of the season last weekend, taking their first loss in 2014, 5-2. Stephanie McDonald and Cristina Alvarez picked up victories for NIU in the No. 6 and No. 3 singles matches respectively, but those weren't enough to put NIU on top. The team will look to rebound in their two home matches this weekend.
On Friday, NIU will host SIU-Edwardsville, a team the Huskies were able to shut out last year 7-0. Head Coach Jason Coomer has been with the team since 2010. Not only is he their coach, he is also the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at SIU-Edwardsville. Coomer coaches the school's men's tennis team as well.
Cleveland State has had a slow start, but this team has been successful in the past, winning 13 matches in 2013 and 18 in 2012. The Vikings are led by Head Coach Brian Etzkin, who has been with the team for over a decade now. Etzkin is a two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, taking the honor in 2004 and 2011.
The Huskies are off next weekend, giving them added time to prepare for a match at Bradley on Saturday, February 22. That one will begin at 1:00 p.m.
