DeKALB, Ill. - NIU's women's tennis team is set to play two matches this weekend. On Friday, February 28 the Huskies will host No. 37 DePaul (12-1) at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. at 2:00 p.m. On Saturday, to start off the month of March, they'll travel to UW-Milwaukee (1-5) to take on the Panthers at 12:30 p.m.
Last weekend, the Huskies played a single match at Bradley, which ended in a 5-2 win for the team. Things looked bleak early on, as the Braves looked tough when they took the doubles point. However, NIU grabbed five of the six singles matches to improve to 4-1 on the season.
DePaul comes into the match against NIU on a long hot streak. The Blue Demons have won 11 matches in a row, including three against nationally ranked teams. They may be the toughest test yet for the Huskies. Mark Ardizzone heads the coaching staff in his 18th season at the position. He is all-time leader in wins at DePaul in women's tennis with 250 victories to his credit.
UWM hasn't had the best results thus far with five losses in six tries, but the Panthers have faced a lot of tough opponents to begin the 2014 season. All six of them currently have winning records, including Drake, DePaul, Marquette, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Iowa State. Greg Cromwell is in his first season as head coach of the team. Prior to accepting the position at UWM, Cromwell coached at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School for four years, setting up his teams for dominating performances each season.
NIU next plays on Thursday, March 6. The Huskies will travel to Chicago State for a night affair at 7:30 p.m.
