DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois sophomore Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central HS), who is undefeated in both singles and doubles in 2013, has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Youel kept her perfect 13-0 record in both singles and doubles intact with six wins (three singles, three doubles) over the weekend in NIU's victories over Nebraska-Omaha, Drake and Central Arkansas in Des Moines, Iowa. She did not lose more than three games in any of her three victories at No. 1 singles in improving her record to 13-0 on the year. At No. 1 doubles, Youel and partner Arantza De La Torre pulled out a tight 8-6 win versus Drake to help Northern Illinois win the doubles point in a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs.
Youel's sweep helped Northern Illinois to its 10th, 11th and 12th wins of the year as the Huskies already have more wins this season than they did a year ago when the Huskies finished the season 11-12. Northern Illinois' 12 wins are its most since 2003. The Huskies are 12-1 on the season.
This week's MAC Player of the Week honor is the second of the season for Youel as she was previously honored on January 30. An NIU player has won the women's tennis weekly award three times this spring as NIU's Haley Dekkinga was the MAC Player of the Week on February 13.
Youel next puts her unbeaten streak on the line Saturday at the Boylan Tennis Courts in Rockford when the Huskies play host to UIC beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
