CLEVELAND - After recording both singles and doubles wins in Northern Illinois' 5-2 victory over in-state rival Bradley last Friday (March 6), Northern Illinois sophomore Kathryn Friedlund was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the league office Thursday.
"This is a very deserving honor for Katie (Friedlund)," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "She's played hard all season, and has really improved from her first year. She has the ability to play in different spots in the lineup, and has provided us some very good depth in doubles. I look for Katie to continue to play tough as we enter the MAC season."
Friedlund teamed up with freshman Emily Rogers at the No. 2 doubles position, and posted an 8-7 win over Bradley's Jessica Buterbaugh and Veronika Wojakowska. It was the Huskies' lone doubles win in the dual match.
In singles, play, Friedlund recorded a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Wojakowska at No. 2 singles. The Huskies went on to win five-of-six singles matches, and overcame the lost doubles point.
The Huskies wrap up their spring trip by taking on NAIA member Embry-Riddle Friday afternoon in Daytona Beach, Fla.
