DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team puts its 14-2 season mark on the line versus Mid-American Conference competition for the first time this year as the Huskies travel to Akron and Buffalo for matches this Friday and Saturday.
NIU, which is 12-0 in matches played away from its indoor home in Rockford, Ill., this year, plays Akron Friday at Noon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio and takes on Buffalo Saturday at Noon at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y.
Akron, which was picked by MAC coaches as the preseason favorite to win the league title, is 8-6 on the season, while Buffalo is 9-0. The Bulls are one of just two undefeated teams in the country, according to the ITA.
NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell knows the Huskies will have their hands full with the MAC preseason favorite at Akron, and one of the hottest teams in the country in Buffalo.
"Akron beat Oregon a couple weeks ago and they were picked number one in the conference so they are always tough, and Buffalo is obviously playing good tennis," Ferrell said. "It's a big challenge for us starting conference play. We're going to have to stay focused, stay disciplined and do what we do."
The Huskies won a pair of matches over spring break and the 2013 team has won more dual matches than any Northern Illinois women's tennis team in the last 15 years, since the 1997 Huskies went 15-9. Sophomore Nelle Youel has led the way for NIU with a perfect 16-0 record at the No. 1 singles position and is 15-1 at No. 1 doubles with teammate Arantza De La Torre.
Every player in NIU's singles line-up has at least nine wins and the Huskies have won the doubles point in 13 of their 16 matches in 2013.
