DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team plays host to Bowling Green and Western Michigan in its first Mid-American Conference home matches of the season this Friday and Saturday, with an eye toward collecting its first MAC win of 2013 and a chance to even its league record on the season.
NIU (14-4, 0-2 MAC) will take on the Falcons (12-2, 1-1 MAC) Friday at 2 p.m. Weather permitting, the Huskies and Falcons will play the first outdoor match of the season at the Huskie Tennis Courts. On Saturday, Western Michigan (9-9, 2-0 MAC) comes to DeKalb for a 1 p.m. start. In case of cold temperatures or windy conditions, matches will be moved to the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. (4000 St. Francis Drive).
Northern Illinois dropped its first two league matches of the season last weekend as the Huskies fell at Akron, 7-0, and lost a 6-1 decision at Buffalo. With 14 wins compiled during the non-conference schedule, the Huskies are already the most successful women's tennis team at NIU since 1997.
In singles, NIU has been led by the sophomore duo of Nelle Youel and Mary Malkin. Youel, who plays at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions, owns an impressive 16-2 singles record this spring, while she and doubles partner Arantza De La Torre are 15-3 at the No. 1 doubles spot. Malkin, the Huskies' No. 4 singles player, earned Northern Illinois' lone win last weekend to improve her singles record to 15-3.
A year ago, NIU lost to both BGSU and Western Michigan. Bowling Green opens a three-game road swing after losing to Eastern Michigan, 4-3, in its last match. Western Michigan swept both EMU and Toledo last weekend.
After Saturday's match, the Huskies will enjoy an open weekend before going back on the road to face Toledo and Eastern Michigan on April 12 and 13, respectively.
