CLEVELAND, Ohio - Two members of NIU's women's tennis team have been recognized by the MAC in the conference's yearly awards. Nelle Youel has made Second Team All-MAC, the second year in a row she has been selected to an All-MAC team. Haley Dekkinga was honored with the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award.
"I am very excited for Nelle and Haley," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "Back to back years for Nelle getting recognized is awesome. For Haley to receive the sportsmanship award is great."
Youel put in a strong season in both singles and doubles. She finished with a 15-10 record in singles play overall, going 12-7 in the spring. Youel played all of NIU's No. 1 matches. In doubles, she teamed up exclusively with Arantza De La Torre to produce a 15-11 record in the 2013-14 season. As with singles, Youel played in all of NIU's No. 1 doubles matches this spring.
Dekkinga is the first women's tennis player in NIU history to claim the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award. This award is meant to honor the player who shows the most outstanding sportsmanship among all athletes throughout MAC play. This season, the coaches felt Dekkinga displayed the most sportsmanship out of all the women's tennis players in the MAC.
"Both of these young women do college tennis the right way and represent NIU in amazing fashion," added Ferrell. "I could not be more proud or excited."
The MAC yearly awards are voted on by the coaches of the conference. Each year, they select first and second All-MAC teams. In addition, Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Freshman of the Year are awards given to members of the conference. For a complete list of this year's winners, click here.
