AURORA, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team recorded a combined eight singles and doubles wins in the first day of the NIU Invitational Friday. Sophomore Sara McLaughlin secured wins in both the singles and doubles flights to highlight the Huskies' performance.
"We played tough out there today," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We need to work on movement and staying within ourselves, but we pride ourselves on out-working our opponents in this program, and I saw a lot of that today."
In the "A" Flight of singles play, Martina Schnapp recorded a straight-set, 6-3, 6-3 win over Western Illinois' Marcela Brandao. McLaughlin followed with a come-from-behind (2-6, 7-5 [11-9]) victory over Juliana Frey of Eastern Illinois.
In Flight "C" singles, NIU freshman Kelly Phillips defeated the Leathernecks' Yana Meinert for her first career win, and Stephanie Okuma captured a victory in the Flight "D" singles lineup.
McLaughlin teamed with Kathryn Friedlund to post an 8-4 win over Green Bay's tandem of Emily Lawent and Lauryn Grimando in the "A" Flight doubles match. Fausett and sophomore Emily Rogers posted an ensuing 8-4 win in the same flight, over Brando and
Jill Furlong of Western Illinois. The draws for the NIU Invitational's second day of competition are posted on NIUHuskies.com.
