Northern Illinois' women's tennis is competing at regionals this week. The team will be split up over the weekend, with two players heading to the ITA Midwest Regional and four competing in the Northern Illinois Second Chance Regional. The ITA Midwest Regional is being hosted University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. at the university's Varsity Tennis Center. Several schools will be competing with the NIU players, including Michigan, Akron, Bowling Green, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Illinois, IPFW, Marquette, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wisconsin, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Youngstown State. NIU players will begin their matches on Friday, October 11.

Back in Illinois, the Second Chance Regional will be held at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. NIU players will be competing against players from seven other teams, including Chicago State, Illinois-Chicago, Marquette, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Illinois State, Wisconsin, and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Matches in this one will also begin on Friday.

Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) will be starting the Midwest REgional together in the doubles main draw, set to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday. The pair is taking on Mackenzie Bowman and Emily Mazzola from the University of Toledo in the first round. Should they advance, the duo will face Mary Closs and Julie Sabacinski from Notre Dame. Past that, doubles play will continue on Saturday, October 12.

Also on Saturday, Youel will be competing in the singles bracket. Draws for singles play have yet to be determined because of the qualifying rounds, which will conclude today. Youel has an automatic bid for the Singles Main Draw, so she did not have to compete in the qualifying draw. Singles matches start at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

"This is huge for them," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "They'll be playing against some of the best tennis athletes in the nation."

Back in Illinois, at the Boylan Tennis Center, the four players that NIU has competing are Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus), Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College), and Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria). All four will be part of both doubles and singles play. The doubles teams will be Dekkinga/McDonald and Alvarez/Pacheco. Draws have not been released yet as they will be determined at the start of the event on Friday.

"These are our biggest events by far," said Ferrell. "I can't be there for all of our players unfortunately, but they should be ready for this."

The Second Chance Regional is set to run until Sunday, October 13 in the evening. The Midwest Regional will conclude on Tuesday, October 15 with the singles championship match. After regionals, the Huskies have one more event on the fall schedule, the NIU Invitational. That will begin on Friday, October 25.
